Paid time off adds up for Lucas County

8/16/2014

Seeing my name in The Blade as the Lucas County employee who was compensated the ninth-highest amount for unused time in 2013 was amusing (“Double-dipping may be an issue in levy campaign,” Aug. 10).

Over 30 years, I have found it difficult to use all of my 25 vacation days, 15 sick and personal days, two weeks off for Christmas, and time off for every other holiday you can name every year.

Maybe you could do a story about the millions of dollars Lucas County spends on additional staff to fill in for the thousands of employees who use the time they accrue.

EPA should run city’s water plant

Toledo’s water crisis was a wake-up call for all of us (“EPA takeover of plant was being considered,” Aug. 10). The city again became a national embarrassment.

You reported that the poor condition of the water treatment plant was known for some time. Maybe the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency should take control away from the city, because city officials are proving they can’t get their priorities straight.

Instead of investing in necessities such as roads and the water plant, they waste money on foolish things such as the Erie Street Market and other fruitless efforts to revitalize downtown.

President made wise V.P. choice

The Aug. 1 op-ed columns by Charles M. Blow (“GOP’s move to sue Obama may aid Democrats”) and Gail Collins (“Impeachment as soap opera”) addressed a possible impeachment of President Obama.

I am with the “don’t impeach Obama” group, but for a different reason: If we remove Mr. Obama, we will have Vice President Joe Biden as president. Talk about a dumb move.

Now I understand why Mr. Obama chose Mr. Biden over Hillary Clinton as a running mate. Mr. Obama made himself unimpeachable.

Blade vital for staying informed

During a conversation with friends, I was surprised to learn that several of them did not know about the firing of Ohio State University’s band director (“Witness says band chief protected her; OSU alum calls firing ‘absurd,’ ” Aug. 12). I can’t help but wonder how they keep up with the world’s events when they don’t subscribe to a newspaper.

Perhaps television news is enough for them, though most programs lack thorough discussions and opinion sharing. I read The Blade every morning because I want to be informed and enlightened.
