To the editor: UT needs to hire more teachers

11/7/2017

I was a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Toledo for 35 years, retiring in 2008.

Over that span, as well as before and after, all programs in the College of Engineering had to undergo an accreditation evaluation on a six-year cycle. The latest was just last month. As was the case in every evaluation I was part of, all seven engineering programs were awarded accreditation.

In last month’s evaluation, the only concern the accreditors had was the high student-to-faculty ratio, and how this hurts the learning experience.

It is a shame that all colleges, not just in engineering, have too few faculty members. If the UT administration is serious about quality instruction, I urge them to authorize more faculty hires in all colleges.

Get moving on Douglas repaving

I wholeheartedly agree that Douglas Road between Laskey and the Michigan line needs to be paved (Nov. 3, “Douglas needs to be paved”).

It is unbelievable that this has been going on for so long. You have to drive like you’re drunk to avoid all of the bad pavement on this road.

I’m sure that everyone is in agreement that something has to be done sooner rather than later.

Kids, including my grandson, cross this street every day from schools, and drivers are swerving to avoid having their cars end up in the shop with shock and strut issues.

Please ODOT and Toledo, fix the problem.

Pipeline hysteria is nonsensical

The Readers’ Forum is filled with letters from anti-pipeline advocates, most of whom lack the scientific knowledge to justify their opposition.

How can they use natural gas to heat their homes, but oppose the pipelines that bring the gas to their homes? They cite one disaster after another.

There is a gas pipeline parallel to I-75 that has been there for 70 years. The pipeline comes north under the Maumee River, and the compressor station is on Manhattan Boulevard between two houses.

A few years ago the wood building caught fire and was put out by the fire department, without the disaster that anti-pipeline advocates have predicted.

City should focus on water, roads

The two most important things that Toledo needs to do are get our roads in good shape and upgrade our city water systems.

If there is money left, then the city can focus on the pool and parks.

I am tired of paying large water bills and driving on roads with potholes.
