To the editor: Is being called a racist actually worse than being one?

The Blade’s Jan. 13 editorial, “Reason as racism” is a sad commentary on our national culture, namely that it is now considered worse to call someone a racist than to actually be one.

Do your due dilligence

In a Jan. 13 news article, “Holland man gets prison for scheme,” a local financial investment broker was prosecuted for fraud and a money laundering conspiracy because his clients lost money while investing in his company.

Shame on the investors who did not do their homework before deciding to select the services of this man and his partners.

Oddly, the politicians we vote into office could also be prosecuted for the same “crimes” with our taxpayer dollars.

Headline sugarcoats Trump

The Blade has chosen to gloss over the shameful, racist remark Mr. Trump used in referring to Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries.

While news media across the country called attention to Mr. Trump’s characterization of these nations, The Blade headline reads: “President rejects deal on young immigrants,” and only gets around to quoting the disgraceful remark in the seventh paragraph — exactly the way the White House would have preferred.

If The Blade chooses to support Mr. Trump, that is fine. But that support should be reserved for the editorial page, and should not influence the way the paper nuances headlines.
