Laura Diaz shot a 9-under-par 62 to take the lead after the first round of the LPGA's Marathon Classic today at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania.

“I'm very happy to shoot 62,” Diaz said. “I would be lying if I said I wasn't. It's nice to get a good feeling after round one.To see the ball going in the hole, I think that's always a boost. To see it rolling and rolling in and then getting close on the ones that don't go in.”

Diaz opened the first round of the Marathon Classic with five consecutive birdies - four on the par-4 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th holes and one on the par-3 14th hole - and finished the day with nine birdies.

Diaz leads the field, four strokes ahead of Austin Ernst (66) and Lee-Anne Pace (66).

“The key is staying patient," Pace said. "Every week it’s staying patient and trying to get into contention.”

The second round of the Marathon Classic begins at 7:15 a.m. Friday. Jimin Kang, Sarah Kemp and Jennifer Song will tee off at Tee 1, while Irene Coe, Alison Walshe and Silvia Cavalleri will tee off at Tee 10.

Diaz will start at 2:05 p.m. on Tee 1 in Friday's second round.

The top 70 golfers plus ties will make the cut for Saturday's third round at Highland Meadows.
