Food writer tries her hand at fiction

BY MARY BILYEU
BLADE FOOD EDITOR

Ruth Reichl’s Delicious!: A Novel will be published on Tuesday. Noted for her poignant and amusing memoirs, Ms. Reichl is a former New York Times restaurant critic who worked as the editor of Gourmet until that magazine was discontinued. Ms. Reichl once said, “if I didn’t have a day job I would write a novel, and then suddenly I didn’t have a day job.”

Delicious! is the story of a young woman named Billie, hired at a magazine just before it closes, who stumbles upon a collection of mysterious letters hidden in its library.

The letters, written by a 12-year-old named Lulu to legendary chef James Beard during World War II, “provide Billie with a richer understanding of history, and a feeling of deep connection to the young writer whose courage in the face of hardship inspires Billie to comes to terms with her fears ... and her ability to open her heart to love.”

Kickstarter campaign

Fowl and Fodder — a restaurant planning to utilize local, organic products — will feature a scratch-made menu and a fresh juice bar. Its goal is to “make gourmet fare easily accessible to everyone in the Toledo area.” To help with the restaurant’s Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 for construction and development, go to www.kickstarter.com/projects/594669751/fowl-and-fodder-local-fare. The campaign continues through May 24, with hopes to open to the public in June. It is Fowl and Fodder's goal “to deliver real food from real farms to real people.”
