Bittersweet Farms fund-raiser July 16

Bittersweet Farms invites you to a wine tasting and cooking demonstration to help support its mission to provide care and services for individuals with autism. The event will take place at the farm, 12660 Archbold Whitehouse Rd., Whitehouse from 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 16. Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $10 per person will be gratefully accepted, as all proceeds will benefit Bittersweet Farms and the Great Lakes Collaborative for Autism.

Party animals

Join the Toledo Elks for an Open House Party from 5 to 11 p.m. July 26. The dinner — roast pork sandwiches with corn on the cob “and extras,” according to Tom Klockowski, exalted ruler of Toledo Lodge 53 — runs from 5:30-8 p.m. The Blue Kazoo, which bills itself as “a rollicking good time band,” will start playing at 7 p.m.

This event is open to the public, and will be at the Elks’ lodge, 3520 Holland-Sylvania Rd. For more information, call 419-841-6653.

Come to the fair

Travel planning website Hopper.com named the Ohio State Fair the fifth best state fair in the country. Find out why from July 23-Aug. 3, as you enjoy rides, concerts, competitions, demonstrations, exhibits, animals, and — best of all — fair food.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and children ages 5-12, and free for children under the age of 5. Parking costs $5 per vehicle. A variety of discounts are available for veterans and active military members, as well as for AAA members. On July 24, those who bring two canned food items per person will receive vouchers good for $3 admission before 4 p.m; all donations will go to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

More kudos for Ohio

Yahoo! Travel has included two Ohio restaurants in its list of America’s Best Hot Dogs. The Senate Restaurant in Cincinnati is included for its “regularly changing menu of hot dogs like the Croque Madame (Black Forest ham, poached egg, béchamel) and the Lindsey Lohan (goat cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, arugula, and balsamic vinegar).” Dirty Franks in Columbus “has made sure to create an option for just about everyone. There are more than 20 styles to choose from, including toppings like brisket, corn relish, and Sriracha-cream cheese. Vegetarians are covered, too: The same treatments are offered for Tofurky pups.”

Rounding out the list are Hot Doug’s and Belly Shack in Chicago; Crif Dogs in New York City; Frank in Austin; Heid’s in Liverpool, N.Y.; Puka Dog in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii; Pink’s in Los Angeles, and Bark Hot Dogs in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Extended hours
