  • In honor of Local Foods Week, which continues through Aug. 18, The Northwest Ohio Food Council is encouraging Toledo-area residents to participate in a variety of events.

    The Andersons will showcase local vendors, such as City BBQ, Clearbrook Farms, Hirzel Canning, and Sechler Pickles, throughout the week. For more information, go to andersonsstore.com.

    On Monday, Patrice Powers-Barker, of the Ohio State University Extension, Lucas County, will lead a program on home food preservation at the Reynolds Corners Library, 4833 Dorr St., from 1 to 2 p.m. This class is designed for anyone who wants to learn how to prepare summer foods so they can be enjoyed throughout the year. And on Friday, Local Foods Friday, you’re invited to One Government Center downtown for local foods and dishes provided by area farmers and food trucks.

    Agility Angels

    On Wednesday and Thursday, eat out for a good cause at Ruby Tuesday, 2915 Glendale Ave. As part of its Community Give Back Program, the restaurant will make a contribution to Agility Angels, a nonprofit organization that teaches children and young adults with autism to work with trained therapy dogs as the animals learn to run agility courses. Working with the dogs offers people with autism an opportunity to improve their physical coordination and social skills, in addition to boosting self-esteem.

    Kernel of Truth

    At noon on Saturday, Mill Fest: Kernel of Truth will celebrate corn with programs about historic baking and crafts. A demonstration of water power will teach how the Maumee River was used in the past to help with grinding corn, and guests can take home samples of freshly ground corn meal.

    The Imagination Station will also present a steam demonstration. This event is sponsored by the Metroparks of the Toledo Area and will be at Providence Metropark, 13827 Old U.S. 24, Grand Rapids. No registration is necessary to attend.

    Caring Cooler

    The Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Caring Cooler, available on Amazon.com, was designed in support of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger. According to the website: “The ‘Caring Cooler’ features a festive food and wine pattern in the No Kid Hungry orange color, offering a unique and stylish update to this classic warm-weather item. Combining practicality and a bold, perky pattern, the cooler is lightweight and features an easy to clean, stain and odor-resistant liner.” The cooler can carry up to four bottles of wine or other picnic and tailgating goodies, and it costs $35. All proceeds will benefit the No Kid Hungry campaign.

    Toledo Food Truck Fest 2 has been scheduled for 2 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. A suggested donation of $2 per person will help to support the center, and the trucks will set their own menus and prices.
