  • Enjoy the Labor Day Brunch on Monday at Sauder Village, 22611 State Rt. 2, Archbold, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meal will include the signature Barn Chicken, biscuits and gravy, crepes, fresh fruit, home fries, pastries, pork loin, as well as a chocolate fountain and much more. The cost of the brunch is $15.29 for adults, with children’s pricing available upon request.

“What was once considered a day trip is now a vacation destination in northwest Ohio,” says Kim Krieger of Sauder’s public relations department. “Families come to stay at the inn or campground, play in the pool, visit unique shops, enjoy great food, and make special memories while visiting the Historic Village.” Activities at Sauder Village include historic recreations and shopping at such places as the Herb Shop and a general store.

Admission to Sauder Village is free to active duty military personnel and their families (up to five people) through Labor Day. Otherwise admission is $16 for adults, $10 for children age 6-16, $14 for those 60 older, and free for children 5 and younger.

    Almondina baskets

Almondina cookies (thinner and crispier than biscotti, full of fruits and nuts and flavor) are a locally made delicacy from Maumee that are popular throughout the country. Now you can order gift assortments featuring the not-too-sweet treats.

Randa Sweet, sales and export coordinator for the company, says the prices for gift packs and baskets range from $7 to $50. One of the options you might choose is a Chocolate Lover’s Sampler, featuring the Choconut, Chocolate Cherry, Dark Chocolate Dipped, and Milk Chocolate Delights.

For the first time, bulk bags of broken Almondina cookies are available for purchase; these can be used in baking or in many other ways (they’re fragile, but still delicious). They come in a variety of flavors, dependent upon what overruns there are. A one-pound bag costs $7, or two for $10.

    Recently received

I receive a lot of products to sample, books for review, and other intriguing items; I never know what the mail will bring. Publishers and public relations firms are always hoping I’ll shower each of their gifts with love. But there simply isn‘t space or time to rave about every condiment or to throw a party for every author.

So I at least share photos of these things on The Toledo Blade Food Page’s Facebook page (facebook.com/thebladefoodpage) to show some of the bounty that’s available. But I thought it might be good to start listing things here, as well. You never know who might be interested in a particular product or a newly published cookbook.

In the past week, I have received two books: The Make-Ahead Cook: 8 Smart Strategies for Dinner Tonight, from the editors at America’s Test Kitchen, published by America’s Test Kitchen; and Tacolicious: Festive Recipes for Tacos, Snacks, Cocktails, and More by Sara Deseran, published by Ten Speed Press.
