St. Luke s Hospital cuts 15 managers to trim costs

2/8/2006

St. Luke s Hospital in Maumee has laid off 15 managers to try to reduce expenses after losing about $380,000 last year.

David Dewey, St. Luke s spokesman, said the 15 employees were all management and not in patient-care positions. He said he doesn t expect any further cutbacks at the hospital, which employs about 1,600 full and part-time employees.

We came to the realization that we were probably too large at the midmanagement level, Mr. Dewey said.

He said he expect St. Luke s to be back in the black this year and the cutbacks are not a sign of long-term financial difficulty.

St. Luke s is the sole private, independent hospital in Lucas County. While some health-care experts have speculated it is ripe for a takeover by a larger health system, Mr. Dewey said St. Luke s is committed to remaining independent.
