Carly Kudzia to participate in triple drug trial for patients with progeria

Whitehouse resident Carly Kudzia is headed to Boston to participate in a triple drug trial for patients with progeria, which is a rare genetic disease that is characterized by premature aging.

Carly, 3, will join about 40 other children at Boston Children's Hospital for one week, for the drug trial. She was diagnosed with the disease when she was 10 months old. She will receive three types of drugs, including lonafarnib, which is drug that is being investigated specifically as a treatment for progeria. The drug helps with arterial stiffness and bone rigidity.

The Kudzia family will leave Toledo Express Airport for Boston on Saturday morning. Due to high costs of the clinical trial, the family also plans to host an event called “Carly's Party for the Cure” on Sept. 27 at The Pinnacle in Maumee. The event will feature local bands and a photobooth. Tickets for the event are $30 per person.
