CINCINNATI  — A federal grand jury has indicted a Cincinnati spine doctor for allegedly performing unnecessary surgeries and billing health care programs millions of dollars.

Federal prosecutors say the indictment issued Wednesday charges 44-year-old Abubakar Atiq Durrani with five counts of health care fraud and five counts of making false statements in health care matters.

Durrani has offices in suburban Evendale, Ohio, and Florence, Ky., with a private practice called Center for Advanced Spine Technologies. Federal authorities alleged that many patients wound up with worse neck and back pain after he performed unneeded spinal surgeries.

He also faces many malpractice suits.

Durrani, who was arrested by federal agents last month, previously told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he would fight the allegations against him.
