Gold appointed to lead school’s medical center

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, chancellor of the University of Toledo Medical Center, has been named head of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Officials at the Nebraska medical center released a statement late Wednesday announcing Dr. Gold’s appointment to the position, for which he interviewed this month. The selection is subject to approval by Nebraska’s Board of Regents, which will meet Friday morning to vote.

If approved, Dr. Gold said he will accept the position, in which he will serve as that medical center’s chief executive officer with responsibility for all aspects of campus administration.

The Nebraska facility has a staff of more than 5,000 employees. It also has 3,700 students pursuing degrees, and a $600 million annual operating budget.

The three-year assignment would come with an annual salary of $775,000 plus standard university employee benefits.

Dr. Gold also will have a health professions appointment in the Department of Surgery.

“This is a remarkable opportunity at a prestigious university,” Dr. Gold said. “I’m very thankful for it, as well as my opportunities and experiences here over the last decade.”

Dr. Gold joined the UT community in 2005.

He was part of a team that oversaw the 2006 merger of the former Medical College of Ohio and UTMC.

He was at the helm of UTMC when it faced major controversy after a kidney that was supposed to be used in a transplant surgery was accidentally thrown away.

Larry Burns, vice-president of external affairs at University of Toledo, said UT officials anticipated the announcement.

Plans for a successor have not been made yet, Mr. Burns said.
