The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is warning residents to be careful as the first blast of potentially dangerous hot weather of the season hits.

Officials urge staying hydrated with non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages, wearing light-weight and loose-fitting clothing, never leaving anyone in a parked car, cutting back on exercise in the heat of the day, and using sunscreen.

Mosquitoes also are a health concern. Along with West Nile virus, the insects can carry a new disease, Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that has made its way into the United States from the Caribbean. It has not been reported locally.
