Rezoning plea for medical office rejected

6/20/2001

TEMPERANCE - The Bedford Township board last night denied the request of a Sylvania osteopath to rezone about two acres near Sterns and Secor roads, where he wanted to build a 5,000-square-foot medical office.

Dr. Joseph Peyton sought rezoning for three adjoining parcels northwest of the intersection and north of the commercial district from residential to professional business office. Dr. Peyton told the board he wanted to build the office to better serve patients in assisted-living senior housing being built nearby.

The board voted 5-1 to deny the request after a number of neighbors complained that the building would have a negative impact on their busy neighborhood. Board members said they thought the development would promote “commercial creep” farther north along Secor, which they said should retain at least some of its historically residential flavor.

Township Trustee Arnold Jennings took part in neither the discussion nor the vote because he and his wife hold a financial stake in some of the property.
