NEWPORT, Mich. - A Monroe man who county sheriff's deputies said attacked another man with a sword during a fight Saturday night was arraigned in 1st District Court yesterday on an attempted murder charge.

Gary Brodie, 22, was being held in the Monroe County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond for allegedly striking Nicholas Crawford, 19, with a sword during a fight about 10:20 p.m. at Frenchtown Villa Apartments, deputies said.

After Mr. Crawford hit Mr. Brodie in the head with a whiskey bottle, Mr. Brodie retrieved a sword and attacked Mr. Crawford at least twice, cutting him across the shoulder and on the hands, deputies said.

Mr. Crawford lost a finger in the fight and suffered severe lacerations to a second finger, deputies said. He was in good condition yesterday at Medical College of Ohio Hospitals in Toledo. Deputies said Mr. Crawford will be charged with felonious assault when he recovers.
