Michigan representative wants trash crackdown

9/29/2003

LANSING — State Rep. Doug Spade (D., Adrian) called for a crackdown on out-of-state waste Thursday after it was revealed that U.S. Customs agents seized one ton of marijuana from a Canadian trash truck trying to cross the Blue Water Bridge into the state.

Mr. Spade said this is the third drug-related incident involving trucks hauling Canadian trash into Michigan in the last five months.

Mr. Spade said he has co-authored legislation that would allow the state to reject trash from other states and countries that have regulatory systems less stringent than the rules Michigan imposes and add returnable beverage containers to a list of items prohibited in landfills.
