Whitmer graduate Wormley tears ACL at Michigan practice

ANN ARBOR - A university spokesperson confirmed Tuesday night that Whitmer graduate Chris Wormley tore his ACL during preseason practices with the Michigan football team.

A 6-foot-4, 279-pound freshman defensive end for the Wolverines, Wormley was not expected to immediately step into the lineup but is part of a corps of defensive ends that includes senior Craig Roh and sophomore Brennen Beyer.

Wormley is also part of a freshman class that is ranked fourth in last year's top 20 recruiting classes by Scout.com

An ACL tear typically requires surgery, and recovery time is between six and nine months.

Wormley's injury is the second loss to injury during the preseason for the Wolverines. On Sunday, Michigan coach Brady Hoke announced that wide receiver Roy Roundtree underwent arthoscopic surgery last week to remove cartilage from his knee and could return within two weeks.

Wormley, a defensive end, was The Blade's All-Blade 2011 player of the year and an Associated Press All-Ohio selection. Last season at Whitmer, Wormley recorded 88 tackles, including 24 for a loss, and had 13 sacks.Wormley also competed in basketball and outdoor track at Whitmer.
