UM defeats UConn 24-21

FINAL

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Brendan Gibbons' 21-yard field goal with less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter helped the Michigan football team to a 24-21 win over Connecticut tonight at Rentschler Field.

The No. 15 Wolverines rallied from a 21-7 deficit and got a pair of second-half touchdowns from Fitzgerald Toussaint, including the game-tying touchdown less than six minutes into the fourth.

Michigan (4-0) has a bye week, and opens its Big Ten Conference schedule at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 against Minnesota at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

 

END OF THIRD

Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint's 35-yard touchdown run with 5:37 left in the third brought the Wolverines within a touchdown of Connecticut entering the fourth quarter tonight at Rentschler Field.

UConn leads 21-14, and the Huskies took a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter on Ty-Meer Brown's 34-yard touchdown off a fumble recovery.

Toussaint has 86 yards on 18 carries,and Michigan has outgained Connecticut 224-165 through the first three quarters. Devin Gardner is 9-19-2 for 80 yards

Chad Christen's 45-yard field goal attempt with 1:14 left in the third quarter went wide left, keeping UConn's lead at seven.

 

HALFTIME

A pair of touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half helped Connecticut take a 14-7 lead over No. 15 Michigan at halftime tonight at Rentschler Field.

Spencer Parker's 11-yard touchdown catch with 3:54 left in the half tied the game at 7-7, and following a seven-play drive that began when Bryon Jones intercepted Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner (5 of 13 passing, 38 yards, two interceptions), the Huskies recovered a fumble after a punt bounced off the leg of Michigan's Da'Mario Jones, who was on the coverage team.

The fumble set up Chandler Whitmer's 11-yard touchdown pass to Lyle McCombs, which gave Connecticut its first lead with 1:56 left in the half.

 

FIRST QUARTER

Devin Gardner's touchdown with less than two minutes left in the first quarter has helped Michigan to a 7-0 lead over Connecticut tonight at Rentschler Field.

Gardner scored on a 17-yard run and leads the Wolverines with 22 yards on seven carries, despite being sacked at the end of the first quarter for a loss of three yards. He's passed for 38 yards.

Connecticut quarterback Chandler Whitmer is 3 for 8 for 29 yards in the first quarter.

Connecticut intercepted Gardner less than six minutes into the game when the quarterback's pass deflected off the hands of receiver Jeremy Gallon.
