Wolverines defeat Northwestern 27-19


EVANSTON, Ill. -- Devin Gardner's 5-yard touchdown run in the third overtime helped the Michigan football team to a 27-19 win over Northwestern today at Ryan Field.

Gardner added a 2-point conversion run to help the Wolverines earn their first win since Oct. 19.

Brendan Gibbons' 44-yard field goal as time expired helped the Wolverines (7-3, 3-3 Big Ten) force overtime.

Michigan plays at Iowa next Saturday (Nov. 23).

Gibbons' 44-yard field goal tied the game at 9-9, after a fourth-quarter in which Michigan squandered its best opportunity to take a lead over the Wildcats.

Despite a 7-yard punt that put the Wolverines at the Northwestern 11-yard line less than three minutes into the fourth, the Wolverines lost a yard on the next three plays, and settled for Brendan Gibbons' 28-yard field goal, which cut Northwestern's lead to 9-6 three minutes into the fourth quarter.

With less than six minutes left in the fourth, Michigan reached the Northwestern 4-yard line but the Wildcats stopped Devin Gardner for no gain on fourth and 2, which forced Michigan turned the ball over on downs.



Jeff Budzien's third field goal of the game helped Northwestern take a 9-3 lead over Michigan today at Ryan FIeld.

Budzien kicked a 29-yard field goal with 2:35 left in the third quarter, ending a drive that was aided by a personal-foul call against Michigan defensive end Frank Clark.

Michigan's Jeremy Gallon broke the 1,000-yard receiving mark late in the third quarter with an 8-yard catch. Gallon has six catches for 58 yards today.



Jeff Budzien's 22-yard field goal with two seconds left in the first half has helped Northwestern to a 6-3 lead over Michigan today at Ryan Field.

Matt Wile missed 51-yard FGA with 7:40 left in the half for Michigan, which has 40 yards rushing at halftime.

UM receiver Jeremy Gallon has three catches for 39 yards. He entered the game needing 53 yards to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark.



Freshman Derrick Green has 24 yards on six carries to help the Michigan football team to a 3-3 tie with Northwestern today at Ryan Field.

Brendan Gibbons' 25-yard field goal six minutes into the game gave Michigan a 3-0 lead.

Less than seven minutes later, Jeff Budzien's 40-yard field goal tied the game at 3-3 for Northwestern, which ended a 16-play, 48-yard drive for the Wildcats.
