Lewan case adjourned to June 16
5/20/2014ANN ARBOR — The court case involving former Michigan football player Taylor Lewan has been adjourned to June 16, at the request of his attorney.
Lewan was scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Washtenaw County 15th District Court on three misdemeanor charges: One count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault or assault and battery.
The charges stem from Lewan’s alleged involvement in a December incident in which two individuals reported being assaulted following the Ohio State-Michigan game.
Both Lewan and his lawyer, John Shea, appeared for the arraignment and requested the court case be put on hold so that the defense could continue to investigate the report. Both declined requests for comment.
The Tennessee Titans selected Lewan, an offensive lineman, 11th overall in the NFL draft earlier this month.
Misdemeanor assault and battery is punishable by 93 days in jail or a fine of up to $500, while aggravated assault is punishable in Michigan by one year in jail and/or a fine of $1,000.
Lewan has denied his involvement in the fight and denied accusations of a report that he intimidated a woman who accused former Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons of sexual assault. Michigan expelled Gibbons in December for violating the school’s student sexual misconduct policy.
