Former WGTE chief wins Fred Rogers award

1/31/2003

Former WGTE president and general manager Shirley Timonere will be honored today with the third annual Fred Rogers Award for excellence in children's educational media, officials of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have announced.

The veteran broadcasting executive and former educator now serves as the executive administrator of the Ohio Educational Television Stations' Association.

She is receiving the award for providing oversight as WGTE extended its educational resources to child-care settings.

The station served as one of 11 model stations participating in the Public Broadcasting Service's launch of its Ready To Learn initiative, a cooperative effort among the U.S. Department of Education, CPB, and PBS. The initiative provides educational children's television programs and ancillary materials for use by children, parents, and caregivers.
