In 1975, Jaws scared moviegoers out of theaters and the ocean on its way to becoming the first summer blockbuster. Nearly 40 years later the Toledo-Lucas County Library celebrates the man-vs.-shark tale with a 2 p.m. Saturday screening at McMaster Center in the Main Library, 325 Michigan St. in downtown Toledo.

Immediately following the feature presentation is a discussion of the movie’s history, background, and cultural significance by Toledo Blade film critic Kirk Baird. The event is free and open to the public.

Jaws is part of the Main Library’s new Summer Matinee Film Series, which explores the roots of modern summer cinema. Other films in the series are the 1962 horror movie and cult classic Carnival of Souls at 2 p.m. Aug. 10, and the 1962 French science-fiction favorite La Jetée followed by The Twilight Zone episode “Time Enough” at Last at 2 p.m. Aug. 17.

Both film dates will be hosted by The Blade’s Dan Neman, and all screenings are at McMaster Center, are free, and include free parking. For details, visit toledolibrary.org or call the Library’s Audio/Visual department at 419-259-5285.
