CINCINNATI — A movie starring Cate Blanchett is set to film in Cincinnati next year.

The Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Film Commission says “Carol” also will star Rooney Mara, of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” Mara and Blanchett’s characters form a romantic relationship in the film, which is based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith.

Blanchett’s acclaimed performances include in “The Aviator,” for which she won a best-supporting-actress Oscar.

The commission says director Todd Haynes and the producers were attracted to Cincinnati’s period architecture for the story set in 1950s New York City.

Commission executive director Kristen Schlotman says filming should provide hundreds of jobs next spring.

Moviemaking in Ohio has increased with help from state tax incentives. Films shot in Cincinnati include George Clooney’s 2011 “The Ides of March.”
