NORFOLK, Va. — The Mud Hens wasted a fine pitching effort by Jose Alvarez in a 4-3 loss Sunday to Norfolk.

Alvarez allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six in eight innings, but a pair of errors led to three unearned runs as Toledo lost its third in a row and sixth of seven.

The Tides scored twice in the second inning. Danny Valencia reached on an error by Hens first baseman Jordan Lennerton to lead off, and after a force-out, Alvarez walked Yamaico Navarro, then gave up a two-run double to Jonathan Schoop.

In the third inning, Alvarez struck out the first two batters he faced before L.J. Hoes reached on an error by Argenis Diaz. On the next pitch, Russ Canzler slammed a two-run homer to left, Canzler’s fourth home run of the season.

The Mud Hens used the long ball to make things interesting against former Tiger pitcher Freddy Garcia, the Norfolk starter. In the fifth, Danny Dorn led off with a home run, his fourth.

In the seventh, John Lindsey got a rally started with a home run, his fourth as well. Dorn followed with a single, and an error by Hoes allowed Dorn to advance to second.

Dorn scored on a two-out single by Diaz.

Toledo did little else on the day against Garcia, who gave up just six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out five to improve to 4-0 on the season.
