Tigers pitcher Virgil Vasquez was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox, ending his tenure as a popular righthander with the Toledo Mud Hens.

Vasquez, 26, was the Hens' opening day starter this year but endured an inconsistent 2008 campaign, going 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA in 159 innings. The Tigers' seventh-round draft pick in 2003, Vasquez stood out during his first season in Toledo in 2007, posting a 12-5 record with a career-low 3.48 ERA.

His lone appearances with Detroit also came in 2007. Vasquez was 0-1 with an 8.64 ERA in five games for the Tigers, and was passed over time and again this season while Detroit repeatedly raided the Hens' pitching staff for help.
