Mud Hens' win streak reaches 6

8/22/2009

COLUMBUS - Nate Bump allowed just four hits and one unearned run in 72/3 innings to pitch the Mud Hens to a 4-1 victory over the Clippers.

The victory was Toledo's sixth in a row and gave the Hens a 17-5 record since July 29.

The Mud Hens scored a run in the first when Will Rhymes singled, stole second, then scored on a two-out double by Mike Hessman.

The Clippers got that run back in the bottom of the first thanks to a rally that began when Bump loaded the bases on a hit batsman, an error, and a single.

Bump coaxed Wes Hodges to hit into a double play that scored Mickey Hall, then got Lou Marson to ground out, the first two of 16 consecutive batters the right-hander retired before giving up a single to Josh Barfield in the sixth.

Bump also gave up two-out doubles in the seventh and eighth but did not allow another run to improve to 7-1 on the season. Casey Fien got the final out in the eighth and retired the Clippers without incident in the ninth to record his 13th save.

The Hens took the lead for good thanks to an unearned run in the fourth. Don Kelly drew a leadoff walk from Columbus starter Carlos Carrasco, stole second, then took third on a groundout. He scored when Jeff Frazier reached on an error by Clippers third baseman Niuman Romero.

With the victory, Toledo manager Larry Parrish took over sole possession of third place on the all-time franchise win list with 491 victories, one more than Casey Stengel.
