Hens’ fast start fades with 11th-inning loss

Durham ties game in bottom of 9th

DURHAM, N.C. — Jason Bourgeois’ RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning led Durham to a 4-3 win against the Mud Hens on Tuesday night.

Chris Gimenez got the game-winning rally started with a double off Toledo reliever Matt Hoffman. Brandon Guyer was walked intentionally, and Hoffman hit Cole Figueroa with a pitch to load the bases with no one out.

Hoffman got a fielder’s choice grounder by Tim Beckham that forced Gimenez at the plate, then struck out Rich Thompson. But Bourgeois lined a single up the middle that scored Guyer and sent the Hens to their third loss in four games.

Toledo scored twice in the first inning off Bulls starter J.D. Martin as Ben Guez hammered a home run to get the Hens on the board.

With two outs Jordan Lennerton walked, then scored on a double by John Lindsey.

Durham got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first. Toledo starter Jose Alvarez hit Mike Fontenot with a pitch, then gave up a single to Wil Myers and an RBI hit to Gimenez.

The Bulls tied it in the third. Fontenot reached base on a fielding error by Gustavo Nunez at second base, then moved to third on a double by Myers before scoring on Leslie Anderson’s groundout.

The score remained 2-2 until the eighth, when Nick Castellanos homered off Durham reliever Steve Geltz.

But Durham tied it with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Gimenez singled with one out off the Hens’ Jess Todd, moved to second when Guyer walked, then scored on a double by Figueroa.

Todd then walked Beckman to load the bases, but kept the score tied by getting the next two outs.
