Mud Hens squeak past Charlotte in 11

FORT MILL, S.C. — The Mud Hens scored four runs in the ninth to force extra innings, then scratched out a run in the 11th to snap a six-game losing streak with a 6-5 win against Charlotte on Monday.

Toledo scored its winning run in the 11th when Nick Castellanos and Bryan Holaday drew walks with one out, with Castellanos taking third on a fielder’s choice groundout by Kevin Russo.

Castellanos then scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Jhan Marinez.

The Mud Hens trailed 5-1 entering the ninth inning, but Brad Davis got Toledo’s game-tying rally started with a single. Davis scored on a double by Argenis Diaz before Diaz scored on a single by Brandon Douglas.

Jordan Lennerton singled to put runners on first and second, and Deunte Heath walked Castellanos to load the bases.

Danny Dorn’s two-run single tied the game, and Holaday was hit by a pitch to reload the bases before Marinez came into the game and struck out Russo and Corey Jones to keep the ballgame tied.

Toledo’s other run came in the third on an RBI single by Castellanos.

Meanwhile Charlotte scored single runs in five different innings to build their lead.

Jordan Danks had an RBI single in the first, while Josh Phegley played a key role in the Knights scoring in the fourth and sixth.

In the fourth inning Phegley tripled off Toledo starter Casey Crosby, then scored on a Lars Anderson groundout. In the sixth Phegley homered off Jess Todd, Phegley’s 11th home run of the season.

In the seventh Charlotte scored a run off Brayan Villarreal, who hit Brandon Short with a pitch, then allowed Short to steal second before giving up an RBI single by Carlos Sanchez.

Then in the eighth Al Alburquerque walked Danks and Phegley, then gave up a two-out RBI single to Angel Sanchez.

NOTES: The Mud Hens activated Crosby from the disabled list before the game to make the start. Toledo sent RHP Robbie Weinhardt to Double-A Erie to make room for Crosby on the roster. ... Lennerton’s two singles in the game extended his current hit streak to 16 games, which is tied for the third-longest in the International League this season.
