Mud Hens' bats fall flat in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings used an impressive pitching performance from Kyle Gibson to pick up a 3-1 win over the Toledo Mud Hens today at Frontier Field.

Gibson had an easy first inning on the mound for the Wings (30-34). In the second, after a walk and a single put runners on first and second with one out, Ramon Cabera singled in the first run of the game for the Mud Hens (24-41).

The Red Wings' offense came to life in the bottom of the third as Doug Bernier led off the inning with a double and reached third because of a fielding error on the play.

A sacrifice fly from Drew Butera scored Bernier from third to tie the game. In the same frame, Brian Dinkelman lifted a two-run home run to right field to give Rochester the lead.

Gibson continued to mow down Toledo batters in the fourth and fifth innings, recording a total of six strikeouts in the first five innings alone.

In the top of the eighth, Michael Tonkin came on to relieve Gibson and picked up right where he left off. Tonkin retired the Mud Hens in order, maintaining a two-run lead for Rochester.

Toledo’s Bruce Rondon came on in relief and escaped the inning unscathed, keeping the Mud Hens within striking distance going into the final inning.

Tonkin retired the Mud Hens in order, picking up his first Triple-A save.

Both Bernier and Deibinson Romero extended their hitting streaks to eight games for Rochester in the win.

Hens starter Shawn Hill fell to 0-8 on the season, giving up seven hits and three runs in seven innings of work.
