SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Toledo outfielder Ben Guez crushed a grand slam over the right-field wall in the 10th inning, sparking the Mud Hens to an 8-4 victory over Syracuse today.

The victory completed a sweep of the struggling Chiefs and was the sixth straight win for the Hens (30-41) and their 10th win in their last 11 games.

Syracuse (27-40) has lost four straight.

In the 10th, Erik Davis walked leadoff hitter Avisail Garcia, who was bunted to second. Jordan Lennerton was then intentionally walked, but that strategy backfired when, after a strikeout, Davis walked the bases loaded. Davis then missed on his first pitch to Guez. The Hens’ outfielder drove the next pitch over the right-field fence for the decisive runs.

Toledo built a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning when Brad Davis clubbed a two-run blast over the left-field wall.

The Chiefs rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shortstop Zach Walters delivered the big blow with a two-run double to right field. Brayan Villarreal improved to 2-0 despite giving up Walters’ game-tying double. Bruce Rondon came on to strike out Brian Jeroloman for the final out of the game to pick up his 13th save of the season.

The Hens return home today to face Lehigh Valley at 7 p.m.
