Mud Hens win 3rd in row in return from All-Star break

7/19/2013

BUFFALO — The Mud Hens scored three times in the third inning, and starter Kyle Lobstein and a pair of relievers made those runs stand up for a 4-2 victory against Buffalo on Thursday.

Lobstein held the Bisons scoreless until the seventh, and relievers Jose Ortega and Jose Valverde combined for three scoreless innings to finish off Toledo’s third win in a row.

Lobstein gave up just three hits before tiring in the seventh. Jim Negrych led off with a single, then took third on a Mauro Gomez double. Sean Ochinko singled in Negrych, pushed Gomez to third, and knocked Lobstein out of the game in favor of Ortega.

Ortega struck out the first two hitters he faced, but threw a wild pitch that allowed Gomez to score.

Ortega allowed just two walks in his two innings of work. Valverde pitched around an error and a hit in the ninth to claim his third save.

Toledo scored an unearned run in the first inning.

With two outs and no one on, Avisail Garcia drew a walk off former Mud Hens pitcher Thad Weber and moved to third on a single by Nick Castellanos before Ben Guez walked to load the bases.

Mike Cervenak hit a grounder to third base, but Bisons third baseman Mike McCoy mishandled the ball for an error that scored Garcia.

The Hens added three runs in the second, a rally that started when Danny Worth drew a walk. He scored on a double by Garcia, who took third Castellanos’ single.

Guez brought Garcia home with a single that pushed Castellanos to second.

He advanced to third on a double play, then raced home on a wild pitch by Weber.

NOTES: Before the game the Hens put pitchers Brayan Villarreal (sprained right thumb) and Pat Misch (left elbow) on the disabled list. Pitcher Kenny Faulk was activated from the disabled list, Jose Valverde was taken off the temporary inactive list, and Jon Link was called up from Double-A Erie. Link will start for Toledo today against the Bisons. … Mud Hens Jordan Lennerton and Danny Dorn each went 0 for 1 in the International League’s 4-3 victory over the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday. Tony Sanchez of Indianapolis hit a three-run homer in the second inning to lead the IL to the win.
