Hens lose after balk called in 11th

INDIANAPOLIS — Toledo’s Evan Reed was called for a balk by home plate umpire Gabe Morales in the bottom of the 11th inning with an Indianapolis runner on third base, giving the Indians a 6-5 victory on Friday night at Victory Field.

Felix Pie smashed a pinch-hit single to lead off the frame and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and an error on the play.

Toledo trailed 5-1 after three innings, but rallied for three runs in the seventh and the Hens tied the contest in the eighth to help send the game into extra innings.

Rehabbing Detroit Tiger Omar Infante collected two hits as the team’s leadoff hitter, driving in a run in the process while Jordan Lennerton added two hits as well.

Nick Castellanos, Danny Dorn, and Kevin Russo each drove in a run for Toledo.

Team faked proposal

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — A minor league baseball team acknowledged this week that it staged a rejected marriage proposal during a recent game as a publicity stunt.

The Double-A New Britain Rock Cats issued a statement saying the club had two employees pretend to be a couple taking part in a between-innings trivia contest.

The third question in the contest was a surprise marriage proposal to which the woman on the field replies, "I'm sorry, I can't, I'm sorry" and then flees.

A video of the stunt has been viewed more than 600,000 times on YouTube.
