Mud Hens’ offense explodes in rout

Toledo finishes with 22 hits, including 13 for extra bases

LOUISVILLE — The Mud Hens scored six runs in the first inning and eight runs in the ninth to bookend a 20-8 victory over Louisville on Sunday.

Toledo (3-7) pounded out 22 hits, including 13 for extra bases, to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Hens knocked Louisville starter David Holmberg out in the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. J.D. Martinez and James McCann each had two-run doubles, and Daniel Fields capped the rally with a two-run homer.

The Bats (5-4) got two runs back in the bottom of the first off Toledo starter Derek Hankins, but Martinez got those runs back when he hammered a two-run homer in the fourth.

Louisville cut its deficit to 8-5 when Ruben Gotay pounded a three-run homer in the fifth off Hankins, but the Hens started pulling away with a four-run seventh.

Martinez hit his second home run of the day to key that seventh-inning rally.

In the ninth, Toledo took advantage of catcher Corky Miller, who was called on to pitch for the Bats. The Hens sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs with two outs.

The big hits in that rally were a two-run double by McCann, his third double of the game, as well as a two-run double by Hernan Perez.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hernan Iribarren hit a solo home run off Jose Ortega and Felix Perez had a two-run single to close the scoring.

By game’s end every Toledo starter except Jordan Lennerton had at least one hit, and all nine starters scored at least one run. Every starter except Lennerton and Mike Hessman had an RBI.

Hernan Perez and McCann each had four hits, and McCann finished with four RBIs. Ezequiel Carrera and Martinez both had three hits, and Martinez had six RBIs.
