Mud Hens lose 5-2 to Louisville

BLADE STAFF

LOUISVILLE — A four-run third inning propelled Louisville to a 5-2 win over the Mud Hens today, which helped avoid a sweep by Toledo in the three-game series.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak after Toledo (4-8) had lost four in a row to Indianapolis last week.

Despite having 12 hits in the contest, Toledo could not find timely hits, stranding 13 base runners.

A crowd of 4,634 at Louisville Slugger Field saw the Bats’ Max Ramirez, Felix Perez, and Mike Wilson all single in consecutive at-bats to drive in runs while Ramirez scored on Mike Costanzo’s sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead in the third.

Louisville (6-5) held the Hens to no runs until the top of the fifth when Mike Hessman drove in Ezequiel Carrera on a sac fly.

Toledo added a run in the sixth as Ben Guez scored on Carrera’s single.

The Bats got one run back in the eighth when Kristopher Negron scored on Argenis Diaz’s single to left field.

Hessman and Danny Worth each went 3-for-4 with doubles while Hernan Perez was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Kyle Lobstein (0-2) started and took the loss, finishing with three strikeouts over three innings pitched while allowing four runs on five hits.

Josh Smith (2-0) got the win in relief of starter Sean Marshall, going 4⅔ innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three.
