Hessman sets homer record in Hens’ win

Toledo first baseman sets International League mark, Hens win 9-1

INDIANAPOLIS — Toledo’s Mike Hessman set the International League home run record in the Mud Hens’ 9-1 victory over the host Indianapolis Indians on Monday night, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Hessman connected for his 259th career IL homer in the third inning off of starter Jake Brigham (2-5, 4.05 ERA). Hessman surpassed Buffalo’s Oliver Carnegie, who played from 1931-45.

This season, Hessman has broke the Toledo records for all-time RBIs (406), and the modern-era Toledo records for hits (524), doubles (113) and runs (358). His 155 home runs in a Toledo uniform are also a Mud Hens record.

Ezequiel Carrera (4th) and Hernan Perez (4th) also homered for Toledo, which had 17 hits in the game.

Carrera's home run was a lead-off shot, the first for Toledo since Avisail Garcia's on July 27 last year against Buffalo.

Toledo starter Kyle Lobstein (6-7, 3.51) pitched six solid innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out three and walking three. Melvin Mercedes, Corey Knebel, and Kevin Whelan each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
