BUFFALO — The Mud Hens avoided a three-game sweep by beating Buffalo 5-2 in a morning game at Coca-Cola Park today.
Toledo starter Buck Farmer and three relievers limited the Bisons to just one earned run off seven hits as the Hens won for just the third time in their last 15 games.
The Bisons scored an unearned run in the second inning to take an early lead. With one out Buffalo’s Ian Parmley reached second base when Efren Navarro mishandled his ground ball, then took third when Omar Infante made an error on a grounder by Christian Lopes.
Shane Opitz then lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Parmley.
Toledo tied the game in the top of the third as Brendan Ryan drew a one-out walk from Buffalo starter Brett Oberholtzer, moved to second on a single by Omar Infante before scoring on a single by Argenis Diaz.
The Hens took the lead with two runs in the fifth inning, a rally that began with a single by Matt den Dekker. Ryan doubled to score den Dekker, and Ryan took third on an error.
Walks to Michael Almanzar and Diaz loaded the bases, and Navarro’s sacrifice fly brought home Ryan.
The Bisons got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Roemon Fields tripled, then came home one out later on a sacrifice fly by Rowdy Tellez.
The Hens added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth thanks to another error by Buffalo, which committed four in the contest. With one out Ryan walked, and he moved to third when Almanzar was safe after an error by first baseman Tellez.
Diaz then singled home run, and a single by Navarro plated Almanzar.
Farmer allowed just six hits and two walks that produced two runs, only one of which was earned. The right-hander fanned two batters.
Daniel Stumpf threw a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two, while Jeff Ferrell pitched around a two-out single with two strikeouts in the eighth.
Edward Mujica came on in the ninth and retired the Bisons in order to claim his second save of the season.
