Songs, laughs at Zenobia Shrine

5/14/2004

Mix a bit of Second City with some Whose Line Is It Anyway? and a touch of Elvis, Patsy Cline, and Tom Jones and you have "An Evening of Legends and Comedy," scheduled for tomorrow evening at Zenobia Shrine.

The Around the Bend Players, a local improvisational comedy troupe, will be featured, along with Elvis impersonator Robert Rosencrantz and others presenting a musical tribute to legends such as Johnny Cash, George Harrison, Garth Brooks, Patsy Cline, Tom Jones, and Buddy Holly.

Tom Hofbauer, Around the Bend Players founder, said the event will feature a variety show of stand-up, improvisational, and sketch comedy, as well as audience participation. Hofbauer's six-member group was formed in 1998, shortly after his return from a four-year stint in Los Angeles. The group performs at private parties, and beginning in June, it will be at the Bayside Boardwalk in Oregon on the second Thursday of each month.

"We're going to have some stand-up comedy and do a version of our show along with some games involving the audience and in between the sketches we'll introduce one of the [impersonators]," said Hofbauer.

At about 10 p.m. dessert and coffee will be served and the last half-hour of the show will star Rosencrantz.

"An Evening of Legends and Comedy" featuring the Around the Bend Players and Robert Rosencrantz's musical tribute to legends takes place tomorrow at the Zenobia Shrine, 1511 Madison Ave. Tickets are $25. Admission includes a 7 p.m. buffet dinner of prime rib and chicken and the 8 p.m. show. Reservations are encouraged. Available tickets will be sold at the door.
