Country, rock at Lucas County Fair

The 146th Lucas County Fair is coming to town Tuesday through Aug. 1 with headline entertainment by rock artist Eddie Money on July 30, and country music group Sawyer Brown on July 31. Both shows will begin at 8:30 p.m.

This year's fair, held at the fairgrounds on Key Street in Maumee, is billed as "An Urban Fair With Suburban Flair" by organizers.

The fair will kick off with a traditional parade scheduled to begin on the fairgrounds at 6 p.m. Monday, one day prior to the official beginning of fair activities.

Gates open at 11 a.m. each day of the fair, and rides begin at noon. Daily activities will include rides, concession stands, a Junior Fair livestock auction at 3:30 p.m. on July 30, a tractor pull, demolition derby, a chain saw demonstration, Signature Harley Hog Races, clowns, and COSI activities for young people and their families.

●Tuesday: Fair admission is free and will feature a military veterans salute, a My Fair Lady contest for seniors, health screenings, and a salute to children heading back to school. Highlights of the evening are a Toledo Elks Lodge flag ceremony at 6 p.m., and a concert at 7 p.m. by the Air National Guard 555th Air Force Band, Wingspan.

●Wednesday: Pamper Your Lady Day, featuring a cheerleading contest from 5-9 p.m. A preview of the Spitfire Ladies Football League will begin at 8 p.m., and at 9:30 p.m. Laser Image Productions will present a laser light show.

●Thursday: The fair will celebrate northwest Ohio schools with a 2 p.m. "Teens, Tweens, and In-Betweens" talent contest, where young people will compete for the Fair's first Lucas County Superstar Talent contest. Winners will receive round-trip airfare for two from TransMeridian Airlines to either Orlando or Las Vegas. A 6 p.m. concert is also scheduled by Cedar Creek Church.

●July 30: Boys and Their Toys Day, featuring autos, motorcycles, boats, machinery, and tools on view. Members of the University of Toledo football team will be on hand at 6 p.m. to sign autographs.

●July 31: A Salute to Families Day. A Kids Clinic will be from noon to 4 p.m. with a host of children's activities. Headliner Sawyer Brown will take stage at 8:30 p.m.

●Aug. 1: The fair will highlight a host of local musicians throughout the day in the Recreation Center Stadium.

Fair tickets, which include entry and all mechanical rides, are $7 for all at the gate. This year, tickets are also available at area Kroger stores for $6 with a Kroger Plus card. Tickets for the Eddie Money show at 8: 30 p.m. July 30, and Sawyer Brown at 8:30 p.m. July 31 are $20, $25 for special VIP seating.
