Youth Orchestra sets pops concert

The Toledo Youth Orchestra presents a holiday pops concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the auditorium of Start High School, 2100 Tremainsville Rd. Ric Wolkins is the featured guest soloist.

Tickets, $5 for adults and $3 for children, will be available at the door.

Sponsored by the Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Public Schools, the orchestra comprises more than 100 musicians in grades 9-12 in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Students earn the privilege of playing in the orchestra through an audition process.

Pianist Ryan Brechmacher performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in First Methodist Church, 1506 East Wooster St., Bowling Green.

Brechmacher is a junior at Westminster Choir College of Princeton, N.J. He is majoring in piano performance and theory/composition.

The Canadian Brass joins the Toledo Symphony in a holiday concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Tickets are $41 and $48. Information: 419-246-8000.

The symphony also performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania. Guests include clarinetist Joseph Sferra and the Northview High School A Cappella Choir. Bowling Green State University's Kusuma Sari Gamelan and Afro-Caribbean Ensemble present World Percussion Night at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.

Clarinetist Kevin Schempf and pianist Robert Satterlee perform music of Bolcom, Lowenstern and Schmidt at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Center.

Gene Parker is running free jazz improvisation workshops and jam sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays in the Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th St. The workshops, sponsored by the TSA and the Toledo Jazz Society, will run from Monday through May 23.

Parker, considered one of the deans of the Toledo jazz scene, has performed with world-class artists such as Tony Bennett, Billy Eckstein, Mel Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, and Zoot Sims. Locally, he has performed with Jimmy Cook, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, the Murphy's Place Jazz Orchestra, and Ric Wolkins.

Pianist Ivan Moravec joins conductor Hans Graf and the Detroit Symphony in a program of music by Lebenbom, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky at 8 p.m. tomorrow, 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday in Detroit's Max.
