Polish trumpeter to visit Murphy's

10/12/2006

Tomasz Stanko, an acclaimed jazz trumpeter from Poland, is making a rare U.S. tour that includes his Toledo debut with two sets tonight at Murphy's Place.

Born in Krakow in 1942, Stanko has been leading his own jazz groups since 1962 and is known for a spacious, atmospheric free-form style that often brings comparisons to such American trumpet aces as Miles Davis and Chet Baker.

Stanko's recording career has ranged from solo performances to high-powered arrangements with Heavy Life and avant-garde sessions with Cecil Taylor.

He has recorded soundtracks for Polish films. His latest quartet release on ECM, "Lontano," was recorded in November.

Stanko's tour with his quartet is only his fourth U.S. visit in his 44-year professional career.

The Tomasz Stanko Quartet will perform at 8 and 10 tonight at Murphy's Place, 151 Water St. Tickets are $15, $20, and $25, or $8 for students. Information: 419-241-7732.
