BGSU event features students, faculty

Changing Lanes, a concert by dance students at Bowling Green State University and the University Performing Dancers, is scheduled in the Eva Marie Saint Theatre in BGSU's University Hall. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30 and at 2 and 8 p.m. Jan. 31. The program will include Align, a modern dance work by Amy Miller of GroundWorks DanceTheatre of Cleveland, and works by dance faculty members Kerri Canedy, Colleen Murphy, and Tammy Metz Starr. The University of Michigan's school of music, theater, and dance presents Arcs in Time, an evening of five modern dance works, Jan. 29-Feb. 1. The event comprises Impact by modern dance choreographer Laura Dean and premieres of works by faculty members Bill De Young, Melissa Beck Matjias, Peter Sparling, and Robin Wilson. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29, 8 p.m. Jan. 30 and 31, and 2 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Power Center for the Performing Arts, 121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor. Chelsea Tipton II will conduct the Toledo Symphony in a pops concert featuring the music of ABBA with the Swedish band ARRIVAL. The performance will be at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Tickets range from $21 to $60. Information: 419-246-8000.

The University of Toledo's department of music is seeking student compositions for alto saxophone and piano for a contest co-sponsored by Craig's Pianos and Keyboards. Deadline for submissions is March 2. Winning compositions will be performed at the UT Spring Festival of New Music in April. Information: www.utoledo.edu/as/music/news.html.

Rico McNeela, director of orchestral studies at UT, will present a free violin recital, "Celebrating the Life and Music of Fritz Kreisler," at 8 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Recital Hall of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

Several events have been scheduled in the Moore Musical Arts Center at BGSU.

•The 51st annual band music reading and directors clinic runs Jan. 29-31. Performances related to the event include the university's concert band, directed by Carol Hayward, at 2 p.m. Jan. 31, and the high school and middle school honor bands, directed by John Climer, director of bands at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and Dennis Zeisler, director of bands at Old Dominion University, at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 31. Both are in Kobacker Hall, and both are free. Bruce Moss will direct the university wind symphony at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 in Kobacker Hall. The performance will feature "Concerto Grosso for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn and Wind Orchestra" by Robert Russell Bennett and "Dead Elvis" by Michael Daugherty. •Baritone Sean Cooper and pianist Kevin Bylsma will perform a free Faculty Artist Series recital at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 in Bryan Recital Hall. Assisting will be soprano Jennifer Cooper, violinists Ioana Galu and Penny Thompson Kruse, violist Megan Fergusson, and cellist Alan Smith.

• Three concerts related to New Music Week have been scheduled in Bryan Recital Hall. Odd Appetite, composed of cellist Ha-Yan Kim and percussionist Nathan Davis, will perform Feb. 2; the New Music Ensemble, directed by Kenneth Thompson, will perform Feb. 3; works by the BGSU music composition faculty will be featured Feb. 4. All concerts start at 8 p.m. and are free.

Voice students of Christopher Scholl are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House program at Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 West Central Ave.

The a cappella ensemble Chanticleer is to perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 29 in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 East Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $35 and $45 and are available from the University Musical Society, 734-764-2538, or ums.org.

UM's Michigan Chamber Players will present works of Arnold Schoenberg and Felix Mendelssohn in a free concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 in Rackham Auditorium 915 East Washington St., Ann Arbor.
