Cee-Knowledge and his band play Frankie's

2/12/2009

In the early '90s, Digable Planets was one of the first groups to meld jazz and hip-hop in a groundbreaking combination that helped secure the group a Grammy in 1993.

One of the group's three founders, Cee-Knowledge The Doodlebug, will be in Toledo tonight, offering up his eclectic interpretation of funk, hip-hop, and jazz.

When he was a student at Howard Universisty in 1991 Craig Irving (aka, Cee-Knowledge The Doodlebug) met Mary Ann "Ladybug" Vierra and Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler to form Digable Planets. They released the top 20 single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)."

The group disbanded in 1995 and Cee-Knowledge has pursued a solo career since the break-up.

With his band the Cosmic Funk All Stars he'll play at Frankie's Inner City, 308 Main St., tonight. Doors open at 9 p.m. and tickets are $12 at the door.
