Faculty, students at Owens present series of concerts

To showcase the accomplishments of its faculty and students, Owens Community College presents its fourth annual Melodic Expressions spring concert series next week. All events are free and will take place in the college's Center for Fine and Performing Arts, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg.

Scheduled are the string and jazz ensemble at 2 p.m. Monday; the guitar ensemble at 7 p.m. Monday; vocal students of adjunct faculty member Jodi Jobuck at 2 p.m. Tuesday and 7 p.m. April 23; individual and group student performances at 12:30 and 8 p.m. Wednesday; a harp performance by adjunct faculty member Denise Grupp-Verbon and friends at 6 p.m. Wednesday; songwriting and percussion ensemble performances at 2 p.m. April 23; a dance concert at 8 p.m. April 24; and a choir concert featuring Gabriel Faur's "The Requiem" at 7:30 p.m. April 25. Stefan Sanderling will conduct the Toledo Symphony in a Classics Series concert at 8 p.m. April 24 and 25 in the Peristyle of the Toledo Museum of Art. Guest pianist Louis Lortie will be featured in Ludwig von Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, 3, and 4 on April 24 and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 and 5 on April 25. Tickets are $10 to $47. Bowling Green State University's Choral Society and the Epworth United Methodist Church choir will perform Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah" with the Toledo Symphony at 3 p.m. April 26 in the church, 3077 Valley View Drive. Emily Freeman Brown will conduct the Bowling Green Philharmonia in its final concert of the season at 3 p.m. April 26 in Kobacker Hall of BGSU's Moore Musical Arts Center. The orchestra will perform Dmitri Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 6" and Alfred Schnittke's "Concerto for Piano and String Orchestra." Also scheduled in Kobacker Hall are World Percussion Night at 8 p.m. April 23, featuring the Afro-Caribbean Ensemble, the Kusuma Sari Gamelan, and the Taiko Ensemble; the Concert and University bands' spring concert at 8 p.m. April 24; and the Wind Symphony at 8 p.m. April 25, featuring clarinetist Andrew Sprung and saxophonists Jeffrey Heisler and Shawn Teichner.

Luminations!, an annual fund-raising event for student scholarships at Lourdes College, will be held April 26 in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with refreshments, music, and a silent auction, followed at 8 p.m. by a performing arts gala featuring the Toledo Ballet, Toledo School for the Arts, and Toledo Symphony. Musica Antigua de Toledo is to perform at 3:30 p.m. April 26 in Epiphany Lutheran Church, 915 North Reynolds Rd. The concert, entitled "Musique Franais en Fleurs," is the third in the series called "The Hundred Years War and More" and features music of medieval and renaissance France.
