Musica Antigua explores early music with ‘Baroque Border Crossings'

Musica Antigua de Toledo, the early-music group celebrating its 30th season, will present a concert, “Baroque Border Crossings,” at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the University of Toledo Center for the Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Coordinated by founder and UT music faculty member Alice Neff Petersen, the group comprises Barbara Craig, Carol Goodman, Holly Greenfield, Sandra Kellogg, Andrea Kissell, John Greenfield, Donald Jackson, Andrew Phillips, and Louann Flick.

“Baroque Border Crossings” will include 17th and 18th-century music primarily from Germany and Italy by Monteverdi, Caccini, Schutz, Pergolesi, Bach, and others, sung and performed on lutes, viols, recorders, and keyboard.

The Singing Men of Ohio, from Ohio University, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Academy Chapel of St. John's Jesuit High School, 5901 Airport Hwy. Peter Jarjisian will conduct the group in a varied program. One highlight of the concert will be an original work for double male chorus by Luke Rosen, choral director for St. John's and singer with Masterworks Chorale. Admission is free.

Up-and-coming violinist Jennifer Frautschi will make her area debut with the Toledo Symphony in its next Classics Series concerts, “A Bow to Brahms,” at 8 p.m. March 26 and 27 in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Principal conductor Stefan Sanderling will conduct the program, which also includes two works by Richard Strauss: “Til Eulenspiegels Merry Pranks,” and “Death and Transfiguration.”

The symphony will join the Toledo Youth Orchestra at 4 p.m. March 28 for its annual Side-by-Side Concert. Kenneth Thompson and Chelsea Tipton II will conduct a program that includes works by Wagner, Schumann, Grieg, and Holst.

Soloists will be competition winners Nick Biniker, violin, and pianists Angela Li and Michael Lenahan. The concert is free.

Special guest orchestra for the performance will be the Toyohashi Youth Orchestra from Japan. The concert will be free to the public.

Clarinetist Yehuda Gilad, from the University of Southern California, will be guest clinician and performer during Bowling Green State University's annual Clarinet Conference this weekend in the Moore Musical Arts Center.

Gilad will be featured in a recital at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Bryan Hall of the Moore Center, a free public event.

Coming next weekend at BGSU will be the 11th annual Marjorie Conrad Peatee Art Song Competition. Some 40 vocal duos will compete beginning at noon March 27 in Bryan Hall. Finalists are to be announced by 6 p.m., with the final round, a formal evening concert, to begin at 8 p.m.

Winners will perform at 7:30 p.m. March 30 at the Manor House in Wildwood Preserve Metropark. All rounds of the competition are free to the public.

The final event in the BGSU Young People's Concerts series will be “Funharmonia” at 11 a.m. March 27 in Kobacker Hall. The Bowling Green Philharmonia will provide an introduction to instruments followed by a performance of Camille Saint-Saens' “Carnival of the Animals.” Special guests will be selected Toledo Zoo animals in a petting area. Tickets are $1-$2 at the door.

A tribute to choreographer Agnes de Mille by the New York Theatre Ballet is slated to open at 7:30 p.m. March 27 in Niswonger Performing Arts Center, Van Wert, OH. Titled “Dance/Speak: The Life of Agnes de Mille,” the production includes dances from “Carousel,” “Brigadoon,” “Bloomer Girl,” and “One Touch of Venus,” among other productions for which de Mille provided dancing.
