Sunshine to open jazz concert series

The Sunshine Summer Jazz Concert Series sponsored by Sunshine and the Toledo Jazz Orchestra will offer free concerts from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 17 and Aug. 21 on the Sunshine campus, 7223 Maumee Western Rd., Maumee. The July 17 concert will feature guitarist Chris Buzzelli with the Toledo Jazz Orchestra. The August concert will feature Eric Dickey. A third concert, to end Sunshine's 60th anniversary celebration, will be Sept. 18 in the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee. Tickets will be $20.

• The rock bands 38 Special and the Outlaws will perform at 7:30 p.m. July 18 at Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Rd., Sylvania. Tickets are $23 and $32.50 at the Stranahan Theater box office, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd.; Ticketmaster outlets; charge by phone at 800-745-3000, or at the event.

• The Great Maumee Dragon Boat Festival is seeking volunteers and participants for the dragon boat races, which begin at 8 a.m. July 24 near International Park. Competing businesses or groups will use 40-foot long boats with up to 20 paddlers, a steersman, and a drummer to compete in races on the Maumee River for trophies. The course begins across from the Owens Corning World Headquarters building in front of the Docks restaurants and finishes near the lagoon at International Park. Admission to the event is free. There will be live entertainment, demonstration of ancient Chinese musical instruments, children's crafts and activities, and kite making and kite flying for children.

• GarasuNoShiCon (Japanese for “Glass City Convention”) takes place from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 17 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 18 at Owens Community College, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg. The Japanese culture gathering will feature anime screenings, Japanese video gaming, culture panels, and an electronic music dance in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts and the AV/CC, Math/Science, and SHAC buildings. Guests include actors Robert Axelrod, Cassandra Hodges, and Julie Jensen, rock and roll band the Man Power, kimono specialist Kerry Porter, soloist Gavin Goszka, artist Alex Heberling, musical group Salad Time Soldiers, fire artist Gwydion, and video game developer Galloping Ghost Studios.
