Troupe presents biblical story of Joseph

Waterville Playshop will wrap up its 2012-2013 season this weekend with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Maumee Indoor Theater.

“Not many people know this was never intended to be a Broadway musical. It was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was a 15-minute cantata for a boys' school in England. Someone said that's a pretty good show and they expanded it... Andrew Lloyd Webber's father said it would be a great Broadway show. That's how it was born,” said director Sam Macera, who is a big fan of this retelling of the biblical story of Joseph's adventures, his jealous brothers, and his devoted father.

“To me it's an incredibly interesting show because there's so many different music styles in it. That's number one. There's Calypso, there's country-western, there's '70s, and then there's the ballady-part of it. Number two is there's no dialogue; it's all music.”

The cast includes 18 children and 24 adults. Among the cast are Jamie Becker as the narrator, Andy Dysard as Joseph, and Erik Christensen as the Pharaoh.

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee. Babbling Balderdash

A trio of crazy leprechauns try to help a tongue-tied shepherd this weekend when the Children’s Theatre Workshop presents Blather, Blarney, & Balderdash at the Collingwood Arts Center.

Three Irish folk and fairy tales collide when the shepherd Fin O’Grady tries to tell a story to win the hand of his true love in this action-packed comedy.

“Blather, Blarney, & Balderdash” will be performed at 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Collingwood Arts Center Lois M. Nelson Theatre, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children. Information: 419-244-5061 or ctw.org.

Godspell

The Genoa Civic Theatre & Literary Society will open Godspell this weekend at the Historic Town Hall Opera House.

Skits and songs string together a series of parables from the Gospel according to St. Matthew in this modern-day adaptation following Jesus and his disciples. This musical opened Off Broadway in 1971, inspired a 1973 film version, played on Broadway in 1977 and again in 2011, and continues to be performed on stages across the nation. One of its most memorable songs is “Day By Day.”

“Godspell” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday through May 11 at the Historic Town Hall Opera House, 509 1/2 Main St., Genoa. Matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. Sunday and May 12. Annie

FREMONT — Daddy Warbucks and that sassy-sweet redhead will grace the stage this weekend when Fremont Community Theatre presents Annie.

More than 40 children and adults will sing and dance to memorable songs including “Tomorrow,” and “It's a Hard-Knock Life.”
