Music at the Market

Hundreds of people gather to listen to the band The Gazebo play.

Tara Zechman watched as her sons, 2-year-old Keegan Zechman and 4-year-old Aidan played in the grass at the Commodore Building shadowed by a gazebo at the corner of Louisiana Avenue and Indiana Avenue, and a band by the same name.

The Gazebo, made up of Perrysburg High School graduates of Edward Bean, Ryan Williams, Henryk Kress, Magda Kress, Jason Scott, and Joe Lueck, was playing for Music at the Market on Thursday. 

Usually The Gazebo is just Mr. Bean, Mr. Williams, and Ms. Kress during recording sessions, but during live performances the other three men join in to cover all of the instruments, which include trumpet, trombone, bass, keyboards, drums, and guitar.

"I hope people walk away being able to hear that we're professional trained musicians," Mr. Bean, lead vocalist and keyboard player, said. "Especially with the ties, we want to look professional. We dress like we are performing at a classical place."

The band couldn't decide what genre they are but said they bring together classical jazz and rock with an upbeat style.

"I think they're great, I don't know what the older people think," Todd Duesing said, a downtown resident of Perrysburg. "It is so nice to get folks to come out in the community and keep the downtown area vital."

Mr. Duesing was their with his three kids as his wife "got a break." They have another child on the way.

Robin Ballmer, concert coordinator with Main Artery, estimated that 400 people were there. She said it was an easy decision to invite them to play with their talent and local ties. Ms. Ballmer said they are trying to offer diverse bands with different genres for different ages and music tastes.

Music at the Market is a weekly event that began in 2009 when it was previously known as Music at the Park in Woodland Park. The weekly concert during the summer follows the Perrysburg Farmer's Market at 7 p.m. every Thursday until Aug. 22 at the Commodore Building. If it rains it is in the auditorium. 

Main Art-ery runs the concert series that is sponsored by the City of Perrysburg and the Perrysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"They've enjoyed running around and dancing," Ms. Zechman said of her two children enjoying the music. 

The Perrysburg High School math teacher and resident said when she heard familar names in the lineup at Music at the Market she wanted to check it out. It was her first time at the event.

"It was not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be like a high school or college band, but they are much more sophisticated," Ms. Zechman said.

Ms. Kress, bass player, said it is great to have the concert right after the Perrysburg Farmer's Market because, "people can hangout downtown get food and kettle corn and walk down."
