'Gentleman's Guide' brings comedy to the Stranahan

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder continues Thursday through Sunday at the Stranahan Theater & Great Hall, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd.

Tickets are $28 to $88 and are available on etix.com, as well as the theater box office.

The Tony Award-winning musical comedy is about an heir to a family fortune named Monty Navarro who decides he will try to jump the line of succession by eliminating eight pesky relatives who stand in his way. Meanwhile, Monty is forced to deal with his mistress, his fiancée (who happens to be his cousin), and a constant threat of imprisonment. According to the New York Times, it is a musical comedy that restores faith in a genre that sometimes “seems [like] a lost art form.”

■ Saxophonist Gene Parker and his son, bassist Ray Parker, are featured in a jazz concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday as part of a quartet inside the Old West End’s Collingwood Art Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo.

■ Lourdes University is hosting a Veterans Day event at 4 p.m. Friday inside its Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania.

Featured speaker is retired Navy Cmdr. Meghan A. Michael, who flew more than 1,500 hours in military aircraft and earned numerous designations. The event is free and open to the public, with light refreshments afterward.

The Toledo Jazz Orchestra's salute to veterans takes place Saturday.

■ The Toledo Jazz Orchestra is performing a special show, Live World War II Radio Broadcast, as a salute to veterans at 5 p.m. Saturday inside the Valentine Theatre, 410 Adams St.

The event will feature a celebrity announcer recreating a World War II-era radio broadcast. There will be a succession of original war bulletins, old-time commercials, and even some ballroom dancers. Harold Lanning, a 91-year-old World War II Army veteran who performed at USO shows in Hawaii and the Pacific Rim with the late Allen Ludden, is planning to sing “God Bless America” and other military tunes of the day. Special guest artists include Mike Williams, a Lapeer, Mich., resident who for more than 21 years has been lead trumpeter of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Dwight Adams, a trumpeter from Detroit who has toured with Stevie Wonder’s band and has taught at both Ohio State University and Michigan State University.

■ Maker’s Mart: Holiday Edition 2017 is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Handmade Toledo, 1717 Adams St.
