Empress of Soul kicks off concert series

Gladys Knight kicks off the ProMedica Summer Concert Series in downtown Toledo on Saturday. Special guest Ramona Collins joins the Empress of Soul, as the seven-time Grammy Award winner is known, on the open-air stage at Promenade Park on North Summit Street.

The concert begins at 6:15 p.m.; gates open at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 at the gate or in advance online.

The ProMedica Summer Concert Series runs weekly through September with a variety of local and national acts. For tickets or more information, go to promenadeconcerts.com.

■ The Toledo Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show welcomes more than 1,000 canines to the Lucas County Recreation Center on Saturday and Sunday.

The local kennel club’s show is the oldest and largest dog show in the region. Show dogs will compete in conformation, obedience, rally, and, new this year, canine scent work. Vendors will be on hand with food and dog-related goods for spectators and participants.

The show begins at 8 a.m. each day. Admission is $6 per day or $10 for the weekend, and the Lucas County Recreation Center is at 2901 Key St., Maumee. For more information, visit toledokennelclub.info/tkc-dog-show.

■ The State Line Gem and Mineral Society hosts its 57th annual Gem, Rock, Mineral, and Jewelry Show at the Fulton County Fairgrounds on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The event caters to wide variety of attendees, including start-from-scratch artisans and shoppers who prefer a finished product. Expect dealers, demonstrations, and classes, as well as children’s activities and geode cracking, during show hours: noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

■ More than 150 classic cars and motorcycles are the draw at the Lake Erie British Historic Car Show at Fort Meigs on Sunday. The Lake Erie British Car Club is behind the 20th annual show.

Spectators can check out the cars at no charge between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will also be food and memorabilia vendors on hand. The fort will be open to visitors throughout.
