COSTA MESA, Calif. — Police in California say a Costa Mesa man was killed in an explosion at his home that’s prompted the evacuation of 16 neighbors.

Authorities say the 52-year-old man was killed by some sort of explosive device around 8 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors say they had found the man lying in the front yard about two hours earlier and called an ambulance but he refused any help and went back inside.

A bomb squad was called to the scene after the blast to search the home. Police say they found and detonated another explosive device early today.

Nearby homes remain evacuated until the house is declared safe.
